Seacourt hosted the Over 40’s Ward Cup from May 1st to May 3rd, featuring one of the largest draws seen in many years! The tournament had a strong lineup of 8 professionals and 8 amateurs competing for this prestigious trophy.
Exciting tennis was played throughout the event. In the quarter-finals, James Law defeated Nick Warner with a score of 6-2, 6-2. Brook Hazelton from New York overcame professional Jez Brodie, winning 6-2, 6-3. In a thrilling match, James Law faced fellow professional Tom Durack, the 4th seed. James fought hard to take the first set 6-5, but Tom responded by winning the second set 6-1. The final set was closely contested, but ultimately Tom prevailed 6-1, securing his place in the semi-finals.
In the other half of the draw, 3rd seed Adam Player competed against Brook Hazelton. Adam started strong with a commanding 6-0 win in the first set and led 4-2 in the second. However, Brook played exceptionally well and fought back to level the score at 5-5. He ultimately snatched the second set from Adam and won the final set 6-2.
The first semi-final featured the holder and number 1 seed, Rob Fahey, facing Tom Durack. The level of tennis heightened, with Rob emerging victorious at 6-3, 6-1. In the second semi-final, Bryn Sayers, the 2nd seed, challenged Brook Hazelton, winning decisively with a score of 6-0, 6-1. Brook put up an impressive fight in his first tournament.
As we reached the final, fans witnessed an intense match between the top seeds. The first set was tightly contested, but Rob edged out a victory at 6-5. Bryn responded by tightening his game and took the second set 6-3, leading to a decisive third set. In the final exchange, Bryn stepped up and won the match with scores of 5-6, 6-3, 6-2.
We were all privileged to witness such a fantastic display of tennis! Congratulations to Bryn on winning his first Over 40’s title!
