Saturday 13th January saw the return of the always dramatic Paul Weaver Doubles with 4 pairs fighting out for the name of Doubles Club Champions!
The day started with a group stage round robin with all 4 pairs playing each other. The first match saw the tournament sponsor Paul Weaver play with, son, Tom Weaver against the youthful pair of Max Trueman and Will Flynn. After 40 minutes of high-quality tennis, consisting of long rallies and some incredible shots, Max and Will came out on top, winning 6/3.
Onto the second match of the day, the father and son pair stayed on to play a regular Seacourt pairing of Neale Turner and Simon De Halpert. Simon and Neale struggled to get going as Paul and Tom were clearly already warm from the previous match, with Tom and Paul coming out on top in the end.The third match saw Neale and Simon stay on to play the second youthful pairing of James Medlow and Bertie Vallat. The young pair came out firing hitting some good winners to dispatch the regular Seacourt pair of Simon and Neale. Next, the two younger pairs faced each other in the fourth match of the day, with some long rallies and great defence in the match. This match saw Max and Will come out on top winning 6/2.
Back on comes the pair of Simon and Neale to play the unbeaten pair of Max and Will in both pairs final round robin match. This saw Max and Will complete their unbeaten round robin stage beating Simon and Neale, meaning they were through to the final later in the day.
The final match of the round robin saw Paul and Tom take on James and Bertie. The stakes were high in this match as the two pairs were both tied on matches won so the winner would go through to the final to play Max and Will. This match did not disappoint. The match saw the pairs go back and forth winning games until it reached the exciting eleventh game, with score at 5/5. With the packed dedans on the edge of their seats, the eleventh game saw James and Bertie come out on top winning the match 6/5 and progressing through to the final.
Onto the final, the youthful pairs faced off in a best of 3X6 game set. With a full dedans, the pairs did not disappoint. The first set saw James and Bertie take the lead winning 6/5. The standard of tennis seemed to keep on getting better as the match went on, the second set saw Max and Will win 6/3 taking the match to one set all, forcing a final set. In the final set, both pairs showed some incredible skill, with balls flying around the defence on show was exquisite with some 25+ shot rallies proving this. Eventually, the match was won by Max and Will, with them winning the final set 6/4. After a great afternoon of tennis, the new club champions were crowned for 2024, with the final score being 5/6 6/3 6/4!
